Contract worth Rs 1,141 cr allotted for Kochi Metro Phase 2

Afcons will begin the construction work by July 2024.

June 25, 2024: The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has allocated Rs 1,141 crore contract of civil construction works to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, as per media reports. This will boost the construction of the metro project. The Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 line will run from JLN stadium to Kakkanad, and the construction of viaducts and stations will begin soon.

Afcon’s bid was the only one technically qualified when bids from other three major firms were disqualified due to technical non-compliance with tender conditions, as mentioned in a TOI report. The documents mention that Afcons will design and construct elevated viaduct and ten elevated stations from JLN stadium Metro Station to Infopark via Kakkanad.

Afcons will begin the construction work by July 2024. The company has been engaged in the construction of many major infrastructure development projects such as Delhi Meerut RRTS project, Atal Tunnel project, Chenab Railway Bridge project, Chennai Metro Blue Line project and rail line to ICTT, Vallarpadam.

The total length of the Phase 2 metro line is 11.2 km. New metro stations will be developed at Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazakkala, Padamugal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukura, Kinfra and Infopark, as per TOI report.

KMRL plans to complete the civil construction work of the Pink line in 20 months, and system signalling works within another four months. Viaduct work at six locations and four station locations will be conducted simultaneously. Precast method will be adopted to speed up the civil construction works. For this, nearly six-hectare precast yard has been identified at HMT Kalamassery. The project will have two special spans of steel tress of more than 60 metre in length each. One of them will be at Palarivattom Bypass crossing area and the second one will be near St Martin Church, Palarivattom Junction.
