May 30, 2024: Over Rs 2,000 will be fined on instances of wasting water, the Delhi government announced on May 29, 2024. There are illegal connections taken by commercial establishments and construction sites from water supply that is allotted for domestic purposes. With Delhi hitting around 50 degrees Celsius mark in temperature, the capital is facing severe water shortage.
An order issued by water minister and chairperson Delhi Jal Board Atishi directed the DJB to deploy 200 teams across the city to prevent water-wasting activities like car washing with a hose, overflow of water tanks and use of domestic water supply for construction and commercial purposes.
The note added that these teams will be deployed from 8 AM on Thursday and impose fines on anyone found wasting water. These teams will disconnect any illegal water connections at construction sites or commercial establishments. The minister said intense heatwave conditions are prevailing in the national capital and there is a shortage of water supply.
