November 10, 2023: The construction of one module of the first metro bridge over the Yamuna, using the cantilever construction technique, had been completed, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director Vikas Kumar said as stated in media reports. The entire project is likely to be completed by September 2024. It is the fifth metro bridge over the Yamuna being developed under the Delhi Metro’s phase 4 project.
The construction work was stopped for a few days in July 2023 when the water level in the Yamuna River rose. The DMRC began the preliminary work on the bridge, which is part of the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor under Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro.
According to TimesNow report, Kumar told in a PTI interview that this state-of-the-art bridge will be visually appealing and become an iconic landmark similar to the Signature Bridge. The Signature Bridge is India’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, which will connect Wazirabad to the inner city. Moreover, the DMRC’s top official said that there were other engineering challenges.
The new bridge will cross the river about 385 metres downstream from the old Wazirabad Bridge and 213 metres upstream from the Signature Bridge, as mentioned in the report.
The four existing metro bridges over the Yamuna are situated at:
- Yamuna Bank – 698.8 metres on the Blue Line
- Nizamuddin – 602.8 metres on the Pink Line
- Kalindi Kunj – 574 metres on the Magenta Line
- Shastri Park – 553 metres on the Red Line
