July 18, 2024: The Delhi-Mumbai expressway project, an upcoming 1,380-kilometre (km) expressway connecting Delhi and Mumbai, has been facing significant delays due to land-related issues in Gujarat, according to a TOI report. Two crucial segments totalling 62 km in Gujarat only saw bidding commence in November 2023. The construction on one of these segments started in April 2024 while the other started in July 2024, the report mentioned.
The expressway project was initially expected to be completed by January 2023. However, the project faced obstacles pushing the revised target to March 2024, which was also missed. Citing sources, the report said that each stretch requires a minimum of eighteen months. To expedite progress, the project was divided into smaller packages for faster execution. Authorities said that the outstanding land acquisition issues are actively being addressed, the report mentioned.
Presently, nearly 630 km of 1,386 km have been opened to traffic in various segments. Notable sections include Sohna-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur (293 km) and Jhalawar-MP/Gujarat border (245 km). The 845-km section from Sohna to Vadodara will be fully operational by March 2025. Subsequent sections, crucially linking to Mumbai’s JNPT port, Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi’s DND Flyway, are expected to follow suit.
