October 5, 2023: The Urban Extension Road-2, a major ring road project in Delhi, will be opened in two to three months, potentially revolutionising travel times in the city, union transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said as mentioned in media reports. Normally, it takes two hours to reach the airport, but after the road opens, people can reach the airport in 20 minutes, the minister said.
The 75.6-km long Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) is an under-construction, access-controlled expressway connecting National Highway-48 (NH-48) to NH-44 through Outer Delhi. It will connect Alipur with the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.
Urban Extension Road-2 project
Aimed at decongesting Delhi, the UER-2 project is being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of Rs 7,715.6 crore. The UER-2 was proposed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the Delhi Master Plan 2021.
The project is being developed under five different packages:
-  NH1 to Karala-Kanjhawala Road – 15 km
-  Karala-Kanjhawala Road to Nangloi Najafgarh Road – 13.5 km
-  Nangloi Najafgarh Road to Dwarka Sector 24 Road – 9.6 km
-  Starting From Bawana Industrial Area, Delhi, to Village Barwasani, Sonipat in Haryana – 29.6 km
-  UER-II near Bakkarwala to Bahadurgarh bypass of NH-10 near Bahadurgarh in Haryana – 7.2 km
Urban Extension Road-2 route
The UER-II will connect NH-1 near the village Bankoli to Dwarka and Bahadurgarh and form a Ring Road along the western range. The route will link NH-1 with NH-8, passing through key areas such as Bawana Industrial Area, Rohini, Mundka Industrial Area, Najafgarh and Dwarka. The ring road will connect four national highways – NH-44, NH-9, NH-48 and NH-19.
The upcoming road is expected to provide an alternative route to the traffic coming from Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad and those moving to and from Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh through Delhi.
The ring road project will also connect with the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
