DMRC develops longest tunnel under Delhi Metro Phase 4 project

DMRC is building around 28 km of new underground corridors under the phase 4 expansion project.

May 30, 2023: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is constructing a 2.67-km tunnel from the Tughlaqabad Air Force Station (IAF Station) to Maa Anandmayee Marg Station on the Silver Line, making it the longest tunnelling work in the Delhi Metro Phase 4 project, mentioned a TOI report.

According to the DMRC officials, the internal dial of the tunnel will be 5,800 mm. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) is 103.9 metre. The initial tunnelling work began on May 29, 2023, by the TBM ‘AMRIT’ on the Silver Line at IAF Station Tughlaqabad.

A TBM is a machine used for excavating tunnels with a circular cross-section through a variety of soil and rock strata. The TBMs can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand. They have revolutionised the way tunnelling work is done worldwide, as tunnels can now be bored without disturbing buildings and other structures on the surface. TBMs are useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas, metro officials said.

Two additional tunnelling drives are in progress on the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor from Chhatarpur to Kishangarh, covering a distance of 1.27 km. DMRC is building around 28 km of new underground corridors under the Delhi Metro phase 4 expansion project, wherein 65 km of new lines are being laid across three different corridors.

DMRC has completed 2.2 km of underground tunnels (for up and down movement) on the Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg section. Tunnelling drives will begin on multiple stretches such as Derawal Nagar – Pulbangash and Nabi Karim – Pulbangash on the section.

There will be a 19-km underground corridor on the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad metro route and a 9-km underground corridor on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg section. The Majlis Park – Maujpur section will not have any underground section. Along with the remaining corridors, the underground work is likely to be completed by the end of 2025.

The Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg is an extension of the Delhi Metro Magenta Line with 22 stations, including 11 underground ones. The Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor will include 15 stations, including seven underground stations. The Majlis Park – Maujpur, an extension of the Pink Line, will have eight stations.
