To provide swift connectivity to commuters traveling from the eastern side of the National Capital Region (NCR), the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), was approved in 2015. The Eastern Peripheral Highway was constructed in 500 days. It is also known as the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal (KGP) Expressway.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway is a peripheral road around Delhi. Thus, traffic which is not destined for Delhi, does not pass through the city. The total cost of construction for the Eastern Peripheral Expressway was Rs 11,000 crore. The expressway was inaugurated Modi in May 2018.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway toll rates was last revised on April 1, 2022. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) increased the toll rates on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway by 10% to 50%.

For commuters, there are seven exit points on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. All these exit points are named after the villages such as Baghpat, Duhai, Dasna, Dadri and Atali-Chasna, leading towards Meerut, Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Faridabad.

 

Eastern Peripheral Expressway: Facilities 

  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway has seven exits for easy movement.
  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway has around 406 structures, including four major bridges, 46 minor bridges, three flyovers, seven interchanges, 221 underpasses and eight railway over-bridges (ROBs).
  • This is one of the first expressways to have a closed tolling system, in which the toll will be collected only on the distance travelled and not on the entire length.
  • To curb speeding of vehicles, the expressway has an auto challan system. Cameras have been set up at different locations to capture the speed of the vehicles.
  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway also has a cycle track of 2.5 m width on both sides.
  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway is also installed with solar panels, to provide power to lights along the road. It is also India’s first smart and green highway.

As compared to other expressways, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway has a higher speed limit of 120 kmph. Consultations are ongoing, to increase the average speed on multi-lane expressway corridors.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway: Security measures

There are CCTV cameras installed every two km on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway for the safety of commuters. The Eastern Peripheral Expressway also has patrolling vans that are positioned at every 25 km for do that crime in the city and vicinity are prevented. Additionally, the expressway also has warning and tracking devices that manage and prevent incidents.

Is Eastern Peripheral Expressway connected to Yamuna Expressway?

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway has been connected with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and will soon be linked with the Yamuna Expressway via a planned interchange to be built near Jaganpur Afzalpur village.

Currently, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway is not connected to the Yamuna Expressway. However, a link will be provided to the expressway with the help of an interchange. This project will be funded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and was delayed because of land acquisition dispute. This interlink which will help in easy travel will be ready by mid 2025, mention media reports.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway will join the Taj Expressway near Noida that is expected to impact property prices in Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, with the joining of these two expressways, travel to the Noida International Airport that is expected to be open by April 2025 will be faster.
