July 6, 2023: Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act 1961 made it compulsory to link your Aadhaar card with PAN card. The last date for this was extended to June 30, 2023, after paying a late fee of Rs 1,000. If you have passed the June 30, 2023, deadline, you still can link the both. Will my PAN card become inactive if I have not linked it with my Aadhaar card?
Yes, as per the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), if you have not done the Aadhaar card-PAN card linking, then your PAN card will be blocked. This will impact financial transactions for which you will have to mention your PAN number.

Who are all exempted from linking their PAN Card and Aadhaar card?
- People residing in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.
- A non-resident as per I-T Act, 1961.
- Person who is 80 years or more anytime in the previous year.
- Not an Indian citizen.
Can exempted individuals voluntarily link their Aadhaar and PAN card?
Yes, people who are exempted can voluntarily link Aadhaar card and PAN card. They are not required to pay any fees for the linking.
Can my PAN Card become operational again? How long will it take?
Yes, you can apply for linking the Aadhaar card and PAN Card and pay the fees. Within a period of 30 days from approaching Aadhaar, the PAN card will be linked and operational.
Where can I pay the fees for linking Aadhaar and PAN Card?
You can pay the fees with the National Securities Depository Limited under Challan no. ITNS 280, Major head 0021 and Minor head 500.
I paid the fine and gave consent for Aadhaar-PAN linking before June 30, 2023 and still the linking process couldn’t be done. Will the PAN Card still be made inactive?
As per the I-T department’s clarifications, the department will check for authenticity of such cases. PAN Card will be deactivated only if the payment and consent made is not reflected.
I am unable to link my PAN Card and Aadhaar Card online even after multiple attempts. What can be done?
You may not be able to link the two owing to mismatch in the details between the two cards. To resolve, you can visit the PAN service providers by the I-T department where using the biometric-based authentication, you can link your PAN Card and Aadhaar Card can be utilised to resolve the failure caused by demographic mismatches.
