Garbage dumps get a makeover under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0

This has created avenues for waste reduction, recycling and reusing.

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, garbage dumps and open dumpsites across the country are being transformed to beautify the urban landscape. This has created avenues for waste reduction, recycling and reusing, promoting sustainable use of resources.

With innovative ideas and community engagement, environmental and social issues have been effectively addressed in many Indian cities. This has not just helped in improving quality of life, but has also created a sustainable and green environment for all.

For instance, the Vande Bharata Express between Bhopal and Delhi passes through a dumpsite. Turned into a green zone, this site was beautified after reclaiming 37 acre of land.

As part of the beautification drive, the once-neglected spaces have now become centres of activity, fostering social interaction and promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has converted areas under bridges/ flyovers into community recreational facilities. Sports complex with various facilities has been created here according to the height of the bridge. These complexes are equipped with safety nets to ensure the safety of the players.

To eliminate garbage dumps, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) transformed many of these points like the Sanjay Nagar circle into seating areas. Under this initiative, garbage dumps were identified and transformed into seating areas equipped with benches, lights and trash bins. Additionally, trees and shrubs also have been planted to create a green environment and promote biodiversity.

Similarly, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) converted around 630 garbage dumps into green zones. These were done by planting saplings, paintings, placing benches made out of discarded items like rubber tubes, tires, tins and other plastic materials. In fact, many garbage points were also turned into selfie points.
