How to get gas connection for a new house?

Getting a new gas connection for a new house is now convenient with various options made avaiable.

Setting up a new home involves numerous tasks, and one of the key essentials is securing a reliable gas connection. Whether you’re moving into a newly built house or an apartment, having a gas connection is crucial for ensuring a steady supply of fuel for your cooking needs. This guide will walk you through the process of getting a gas connection, from selecting the right type—LPG or PNG—to navigating the application and installation steps. With a clear understanding of the procedures involved, you can streamline this process and ensure that your new home is fully equipped for comfortable living.

Why is a new gas connection required

A new gas connection is necessary for ensuring a reliable and safe source of fuel for daily cooking needs. It provides convenience and efficiency, making it an integral part of a household.

There are two primary types of gas connections in India: LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and PNG (Piped Natural Gas). Having a gas connection allows for hassle-free meal preparation and, in the case of PNG, eliminates the need for frequent cylinder refills.

Moreover, the widespread availability of online services has made applying for a gas connection quick and easy. It is vital for maintaining a continuous, safe energy supply for cooking in any household.

Types of gas connections

There are two types of gas connections based on the facility.

PNG (Piped Natural Gas)

PNG is delivered directly to homes through a network of pipelines, providing a continuous and uninterrupted supply of gas. Once installed, PNG eliminates the need for storing or refilling gas cylinders, offering convenience and ease of use. The installation involves setting up pipelines from the main supply to the home, which can be complex but ensures a reliable and often cost-effective gas supply over time.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)

LPG is supplied in liquid form within pressurized cylinders, which need to be transported and connected to appliances. It requires regular refills once the gas in a cylinder is depleted, making it less convenient compared to PNG. The installation is simpler, involving just the setup of a cylinder and regulator, but managing and storing cylinders can be less convenient and may involve fluctuating costs.

PNG Vs LPG gas connection

Aspect PNG (Piped Natural Gas) LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)
Supply Method Supplied through a continuous pipeline. Supplied in cylinders as a liquid.
Availability Available 24/7; no need for frequent refills. Requires regular refills and booking of new cylinders.
Cost Generally lower and more stable cost. Higher cost due to refills and cylinder charges.
Convenience High; no need to manage physical cylinders. Moderate; requires storage and handling of cylinders.
Installation Requires pipeline installation, which can be complex. Simple installation of a gas cylinder and regulator.
Space Requirement No space required for storage. Requires space to store gas cylinders.
Booking Process No need for booking; continuous supply. Booking required for refills, which can be done online or by phone.
Safety Generally considered safer due to constant supply. Safety depends on cylinder handling and installation; leaks need to be monitored.
Environmental Impact Lower emissions compared to LPG. Higher emissions compared to PNG.
Usage Ideal for continuous and high-volume usage. Suitable for intermittent and smaller-volume usage.
Flexibility Fixed location; cannot be moved. Portable and can be used in various locations.
Government Schemes Not usually subsidized; pricing is market-driven. Subsidized in some regions under schemes like PMUY.
Maintenance Low; mostly involves ensuring the pipeline is intact. Moderate; requires regular cylinder inspection and replacement.
Service Providers Limited to regions with PNG infrastructure. Widely available with multiple public and private suppliers.

Advantages of LPG gas

Some of the key advantages of LPG gas compared to other fuels are given below.

Reduced scaling: LPG minimizes scaling issues compared to other fuels.

Lower corrosion effects: LPG causes lower corrosion effects in equipment and appliances.

Versatile applications: LPG can be utilised for various applications.

Environmental friendliness: LPG is considered environment friendly due to low emissions.

Low maintenance: Maintenance requirements for LPG systems are generally lower than those for other fuels.

Easy storage: LPG can be stored easily and conveniently.

Clean burning: LPG burns efficiently, contributing to reduced pollution.

Applying for a new gas connection in India is easy if you have an identity and address proof. You can also avail of gas supply at lower rates under the subsidy schemes offered by the Indian government. However, responsible usage of the facility is highly recommended as gas leaks can become a cause for accidents.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY): The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), initiated in May 2016, aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically disadvantaged households across India. As of March 1, 2024, the scheme has benefited over 10.27 crore women.

In a significant move to make LPG more affordable, the government increased the targeted subsidy for PMUY beneficiaries to ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder, effective from October 5, 2023. This subsidy is directly credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts and applies to up to 12 refills per year. Consequently, as of February 1, 2024, the effective price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for PMUY consumers in Delhi is ₹603.

The impact of these measures is evident in the increased LPG adoption among PMUY beneficiaries. The average number of refills per beneficiary rose from 3.01 in the fiscal year 2019-20 to 3.87 by January 2024, indicating a 29% increase in usage.

Safety tips for your new gas connection

To ensure safe usage of your gas cylinder after getting a new connection, follow these tips:

  • Keep inflammable items away from the kitchen or utility area where the gas cylinder is stored.
  • Avoid covering the cylinder with plastic or cloth to prevent any risk of flames.
  • Always close the safety valve at night or when you’re away from home.
  • Store the gas cylinder in a well-ventilated area to prevent gas buildup.
  • If you detect a gas smell, close the safety valve immediately, avoid lighting any fires, open all windows and doors, and call for assistance right away.

  • Mandatory Safety Inspections: Regular inspections of LPG installations are mandated to ensure compliance with safety standards. The Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016, outline the requirements for the safe storage, handling, and usage of gas cylinders. These rules stipulate that any person storing gas cylinders must execute necessary additions, alterations, or repairs to the storage shed within a specified period if deemed necessary by the inspecting authority.

  • BIS Certification for Gas Appliances: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification is a process that certifies a product conforms to specific Indian standards, ensuring its safety for use in the Indian market. For instance, domestic gas stoves must obtain BIS ISI Certification to use the ISI Mark, indicating compliance with safety and quality standards.

Housing.com POV

A gas connection isn’t just a household utility—it’s a critical component of your home’s safety and efficiency. While securing one has become more accessible with digital platforms and government schemes like PMUY, the real value lies in making informed choices. Prioritise BIS-certified appliances, adhere to mandatory safety checks and choose between LPG and PNG based on long-term needs, not just immediate convenience. In the end, it’s not about just getting a connection—it’s about ensuring safe, sustainable energy for your home’s future.
