Geo-tagging of properties mandatory to avail MCD property tax exemption

MCD has urged property owners in the city to complete the process of geo-tagging of their properties.

December 6, 2023: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has made geo-tagging of all properties mandatory to avail of property tax exemption, according to an official statement. Taxpayers who fail to geo-tag their properties by January 31, 2024, will not be eligible to avail of the 10% rebate on lump sum advance payment of tax in the next financial year by June 30, 2024, the MCD said.

The civic body has urged property owners in the city to complete the process of geo-tagging of their properties. MCD also said that if a property has already been geo-tagged by MCD officers, there is no need to further geo-tag it.

MCD has asked property owners in the city who have not registered their assets on the MCD property tax portal to register their properties, generate UPIC and geo-tag the properties. Failing to register one’s property by the specified deadline of January 31 will result in legal action by the civic body against the defaulters and proceeding against them to recover the tax.

According to the MCD, geo-tagging of properties aims to provide a location-based identification of individual properties and will enable better provisioning of service delivery to the citizens.

What is geo-tagging of properties?

Geo-tagging of properties refers to assigning a unique Latitude–Longitude to a property on a GIS map by choosing the current location against any UPIC so that all properties have their location identified against a unique Latitude-Longitude position. UPIC refers to the Unique Property Identification Code allotted to a property.

The MCD has introduced a mobile application for geo-tagging all residential and non-residential properties. Property owners must download the mobile app, Unified Mobile App (UMA), from Google Play Store. They can also visit the MCD’s official website at https://mcdonline.nic.in/mcdapp.html.

How to geo-tag a property?

  • Visit the official mobile app. To geo-tag a property, an applicant must select the citizen option on the UMA app and enter login details.
  • Choose the UPIC for geo-tagging using the registered mobile number.
  • Select the Property UPIC. Go to the Action button and click ‘geo-tagging’. The map location will pop up.

Property owners who do not have UPIC numbers for their properties must first generate the UPIC and complete the geo-tagging of their properties.
