Govt amends Aadhaar rules; supporting doc may be updated once in 10 years

However, the ministry has clarified that doing so is optional and not mandatory.

June 16, 2023: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the last date to update your Aadhaar documents for free by three months, till September 14, 2023. The government has amended Aadhaar rules to specify that cardholder may update their supporting documents at least once in 10 years from the date of enrolment.  To incorporate this change, the Centre has made changes in the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations. The move is aimed at ensuring “continued accuracy” of Aadhaar-related information in the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR).

Here is how to update Aadhaar supporting documents!

However, the ministry has clarified that doing so is optional and not mandatory.

Updating of supporting documents would mean Aadhaar cardholders will have to submit copies of their identity proof and address proof along with the Aadhaar update form either online or at designated citizen service centres, according to a gazette notification issued by the ministry of electronics and information technology.

“Aadhaar number holders may, on completion of every 10 years from the date of enrolment for Aadhaar, update their supporting documents…at least once, by submitting proof of identity and proof of address documents… to ensure continued accuracy of their information in the CIDR, in such manner as may be specified by the authority from time to time,” the ministry notification said.

“The mandatorily update of Aadhaar cards after 10 years is incorrect. Although citizens may do so on completing every 10 years,” it clarified.

In October this year, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had asked Aadhaar cardholders to identity and address proof documents if they were issued the card more than 10 years ago. To offer this facility online, the UIDAI has added a new feature of ‘Update Document’ on its website.
