April 26, 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing a significant challenge with property tax dues exceeding Rs 3,000 crore from various government entities, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Mumbai Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Railways, port trust, Mumbai Police, and other central and state government entities.
This issue arises as the civic body experienced its lowest property tax recovery since 2012, mainly due to delayed issuance of tax bills. Consequently, the BMC extended the deadline for property tax payments to May 25, extending beyond the usual deadline of March 31. Currently, the data reveals that several government entities have outstanding dues totaling Rs 3,085 crore.
Among these, the MMRDA tops the list with property tax dues amounting to Rs 2,042.15 crore, which includes a penalty of Rs 790.66 crore for non-payment of outstanding dues. Similarly, the MHADA owes Rs 245.93 crore to the BMC, with Rs 88.45 crore attributed to penalties. The Mumbai Police owes Rs 113.15 crore, inclusive of Rs 45.44 crore in penalties. The Bombay Port Trust (BPT) has outstanding property tax worth Rs 30.7 crore, with Rs 19.41 crore in penalties, while the railways owe Rs 8.31 crore, including Rs 4.27 crore in penalties.
Additionally, the central government’s dues to the BMC amount to Rs 293.86 crore, with penalties amounting to Rs 146.21 crore, and the state government owes Rs 351.23 crore, including Rs 167.44 crore in penalties.
