The Income Tax (I-T) department on March 28, 2023, extended the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar to June 30, 2023, from the previous deadline of March 31, 2023. The linking will be possible only after paying a late fee of Rs 1,000, said the department.
“In order to provide some more time to the taxpayers, the date for linking PAN and Aadhaar has been extended to June 30, 2023, whereby persons can intimate their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for Aadhaar-PAN linking without facing repercussions,” the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement on March 28, 2023.
Under the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority on or before June 30, 2023, on payment of a prescribed fee. So far, over 50 crore PANs have been linked with Aadhaar.
From July 1, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who fail to link it with their Aadhaar will become inoperative. As a result of this, they will not be able to claim income tax refund, they will receive no interest on non-payment of the refund amount for the period during which the PAN remains inoperative, and they will have to pay TDS and TCS at higher rate. PAN can be made operative again after linking with Aadhaar in a matter of 30 days.
