Govt launches PM Kisan mobile app with face-authentication feature

The feature enables PM Kisan e-KYC by scanning face without OTP or fingerprint.

June 22, 2023: Agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister Narendra Singh Tomar today launched the PM Kisan mobile app with face-authentication feature. Thousands of farmers present in Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the country as well as officers of the Central and state governments and representatives of various government agencies and agricultural organisations were virtually connected to the event held at the Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi.

The new feature will enable farmers eligible to get financial support under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi complete e-KYC by scanning face, the ministry said in a statement.

Completing KYC is mandatory to receive the Rs 6,000 annual subsidy under the PM Kisan scheme. The Central government provides this subsidy through a direct benefits transfer mode in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.

“Recognising the need to make e-KYC mandatory, the government of India has extended the ability of farmers to perform e-KYC to officers of state governments so that each officer can complete the e-KYC process for 500 farmers,” the ministry said.

According to the statement, the new app is easy to use and easily available for download on the Google Play Store. The app will also provide important information related to the scheme and the PM Kisan accounts to the farmers. Farmers can know the status of land seeding, the linking status of Aadhaar with bank accounts and e-KYC, using the ‘No User Status Module’. The department has also roped in India Post Payment Bank to open Aadhaar-linked bank accounts for beneficiaries at their doorstep and asked common service centres to organise village-level e-KYC camps with the help of states and union territories.

“The Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi is a comprehensive and ambitious scheme, in the implementation of which state governments have performed their role very diligently. As a result of this, we are in a position to pay the instalment of the scheme to about 8.5 crore farmers after KYC. The more refined this platform, the more it will be useful for PM-Kisan, and whenever any benefit has to be given to the farmers, complete data will be available with the Central and state governments so that no problem can arise in data verification,” said Tomar.

The minister added that the PM Kisan scheme was an innovative scheme whose benefits are being given by the government to the farmers without any middlemen.

While stating that prime minister Narendra Modi has insisted that ell eligible farmers must receive the benefit, the minister said that work was underway in states, including UP, to ensure more and more farmers are able to receive the 14th Pm Kisan installment, likely to be released in June. Tomar requested that all states act in this regard.

Under the PM Kisan, one of the world’s largest DBT schemes, Rs 2.42 lakh crore has been transferred to the accounts of more than 11 crore farmers. Of these, more than 3 crore are women. Also, over 8.1 crore farmers were paid the 13th installment of the PM Kisan directly into their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts through the Aadhaar- Enabled Payment. The difficulties related to Aadhaar verification and bank account details update on the PM Kisan portal were resolved by effective use of digital public goods, the ministry said.
