Govt sanctions Rs 188.95 cr for Mahakaleshwar Temple ropeway

The proposed ropeway will help in movement especially during the peak pilgrimage season.

March 16, 2024: The government has sanctioned Rs 188.95 crore to build, operate and maintain the existing ropeway between the Ujjain Junction Railway Station and the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. In a post shared on microblogging site X, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari said the project will be taken up on a hybrid annuity model.

Gadkari said the proposed ropeway will help in movement especially during the peak pilgrimage season and reduce the travel time between the two points to 7 minutes. The ropeway will facilitate 64,000 pilgrims every day. The Union Minister said it would promote tourism and provide eco-friendly means of transportation while creating new employment opportunities.

The 176.2-km ropeway will start at the Ujjain Railway Station and end at Ganesh Colony near the Mahakal Temple. It will also have a stop at the Triveni Museum in the middle. The Ujjain Junction Railway Station-Mahakaleshwar Temple ropeway is expected to be ready by 2028.
