GSTN: All about Goods and Services Tax Network

Here’s all you need to know about GSTN, the entity responsible for developing IT infrastructure for the GST system in India.

What is GSTN?

GSTN or Goods and Services Tax Network is an entity that manages the backend of the GST system in India. A non-profit, non-government company, GSTN provides IT infrastructure and services to the central and state governments, taxpayers and other stakeholders, to implement the Goods and Services Tax in India. GSTN has also developed the front-end of the overall structure through the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in.

The website acts as the central database for all GST-related information in India.

 

GSTN structure

Incorporated on March 28, 2013, GSTN is set up under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 and under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956. While both, the centre and state governments, have 24.5% equity shares each in GSTN, the remaining 51% share is held by non-governmental institutions through various mechanisms.

State governments: 24.5%

HDFC: 10%

HDFC Bank: 10%

ICICI Bank: 10%

NSE Strategic Investment Co: 10%

LIC Housing Finance Ltd.: 11%

However, GSTN may soon be converted into be a fully-owned government organisation, as recommended by the GST Council.

  7. Taxpayer migration from erstwhile regime to GST regime
  8. IT infrastructure procurement, commissioning with state-of-the-art security apparatus
  9. Systemic resilience against failures and disaster recovery mechanism
  10. Helpdesk set-up and operations
  11. Training and capacity building
  12. GST ecosystem creation and management
  13. Backend system for 27 states/UTs for assessments, appeal, etc.

 

GSTN projects

GST: Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax launched in India in 2017. 

E-way bill: E-way bill is an electronic document generated on the e-way bill portal evidencing movement of goods.

E-invoice: E-invoice involves reporting details of specified GST documents to a government-notified portal and obtaining a reference number.

TINXSYS: Tax Information Exchange System (TINXSYS) is a centralised system, facilitating information exchange among commercial tax departments of all states for better administration of inter-state trade.

Invoice incentivisation: Mera Bill Mera Adhikaar scheme to incentivise citizens and consumers.
