Gurgaon MC to take action against 3,200 property tax defaulters

The MCG is offering a 15% rebate to those who have yet to pay their property tax dues.

March 22, 2024: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has identified around 4,857 property tax defaulters in the city who are yet to pay tax dues of Rs 1 lakh or more, as per MCG data cited in a TOI report. The defaulters owe the corporation a total of Rs 160 crore in property tax dues.

The MCG has set a deadline of March 31, 2024, for the payment of property tax dues. After that, it will start sealing these properties and disconnecting water and sewer connections.

According to the MC Act, if a person does not pay property tax regularly every year, the government levies an interest at the rate of 18% per annum. In addition, the authority may initiate the legal process to seal and auction the properties of those who have not paid the property tax for a long time. 

In the current fiscal year, the corporation has generated revenue of Rs 229 crore from property tax and is targeting Rs 250 crore by the end of the month. It has set the estimated income from this head at Rs 250 crore for 2024-25 as well.

 

MCG allows 100% waiver, 15% rebate on property tax dues

Further, to benefit property owners, the MCG has decided to waive the penal interest. The authority is also offering a 15% rebate to those who have yet to pay their property tax dues. According to the new scheme, property owners must pay their tax dues by March 31. Moreover, one will be eligible to get a 100% waiver only if they clear the dues before the last date, as per a TOI report.

An official said, as cited in the media report, that those who have not paid their property tax yet must check their property data on the government’s no-dues certificate (NDC) portal and self-certify the data to pay the tax.

Property owners can self-verify the data on the official portal ulbhryndc.org. The MCG is also organising special camps for self-certification of property tax data by collaborating with RWAs, market associations and citizens’ groups.
