Haryana govt launches scheme to waive interest on pending property tax

Complete interest is being waived on the outstanding tax amount under the House Tax Interest Waiver Scheme.

Haryana government has announced a waiver on interest payment on pending property tax till December 31, 2022. With an estimated Rs 1,000 crore outstanding payment, owners of residential properties in the state have been asked to deposit the tax before December end, under the House Tax Interest Waiver Scheme implemented across urban areas.

Under the scheme, complete interest is being waived on the outstanding house tax amount, the Haryana’s Urban Local Bodies Minister Kamal Gupta said on December 13, 2022. Through a survey, the department has identified around 43 lakh properties in urban areas for property tax of which property IDs for 33 lakh have been made, he added. Further, earlier only 25 per cent citizens used to deposit property tax. However, with the creation of property IDs, all people would now pay tax to the urban local bodies department, he said.

According to Gupta, over 23.50 lakh new properties were identified after the survey, of which, 1.98 lakh objections were registered. One lakh objections have been resolved, 60,000 cancelled and 30,000 are pending. The officers below the rank of District Municipal Commissioner have been authorised to remove these objections so that they can be addressed quickly. The process of regularising illegal colonies across different cities is underway.

As many as 2,237 illegal colonies were identified during the survey. Of these, a total of 1,399 colonies are in the urban body area. The government has asked for applications to regularise these illegal colonies, through the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). Proposals for applications of 66 colonies were received through RWAs, so far. These colonies will be regularised soon, Gupta said.

Under the ‘Mukhyamantri Shehri Nikaya Swamitva Yojna’, the state has received 7,077 applications to provide ownership rights to tenants of residential properties and shops in urban areas residing there for over 20 years. Of these, ownership rights were given to 1,761 and action is being taken on 4,012 applications, the minister said.
