The Ambala Kotputli Expressway is an upcoming greenfield corridor that will link Ambala city in Haryana and Kotputli in Rajasthan. The six-lane, access-controlled Ambala Kotputli Highway, with a total length of 313 kilometres, is expected to give a major boost to the economic activities in the region.

In August 2022, 227-km Ambala-Narnaul expressway (national highway-152D), also known as Trans–Haryana Expressway, was opened to the public. While inaugurating the expressway, Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala said that the highway will significantly reduce travel time from Ambala to Jaipur. It will ease traffic in NCR and boost all-round industrial development and economic growth in Haryana. The Ambala-Narnaul highway is a part of the Ambala Kotputli Expressway and passes through 112 villages across eight districts in Haryana.

The Union road transport and highways minister, Nitin Gadkari said that the government was focusing on a safety-first approach for the design and construction of roads, development of environment-friendly roads, industry-friendly approach, new technology for safer and economic roads and faster construction.

Ambala Kotputli Expressway route map details

The Ambala Kotputli Expressway project comprises of four road projects:

  • Ambala – Ismailabad Expressway, brownfield upgrade of NH 152: 42.5 km
  • Trans Haryana Expressway/ Ambala Narnaul greenfield expressway): 227 km
  • Narnaul Bypass, brownfield upgrade: 14 km
  • Narnaul to Paniyala Mod (NH 48), section of NH 148B near Kotputli, brownfield upgrade: 30 km

The six-lane greenfield corridor will start from Ambala in Haryana, via Narnaul and reach up to Kotputli neighbouring Jaipur in Rajasthan. It is an economic corridor comprising of four road projects:

  • A 39-km section of NH 152 from Ambala to Ismailabad.
  • The Trans Haryana Expressway or the Ambala-Narnaul Expressway spanning 227 kms.
  • A 14-km stretch of Narnaul Bypass.
  • A 30-km section of NH 148B from Narnaul to Paniyala Mod (NH-48) near Kotputli.

The upcoming Delhi Vadodara Mumbai expressway, which will be connected to National Highway 148B, will also be linked to the Ambala Kotputli corridor. Thus, it will offer the shortest route to the cities in western India like Mumbai from the northern areas, including Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

The Ambala-Narnaul highway passes through 112 villages across eight districts of Haryana:

  • Kurukshetra
  • Kaithal
  • Karnal
  • Jind
  • Rohtak
  • Bhiwani
  • Charkhi Dadri
  • Mahendragarh

Further, national highway-152D covers the Narnaul bypass and NH-148B connecting the Delhi-Jaipur highway at Paniyala Mode near Kotputli.

Ambala Kotputli Expressway status and project timeline

On July 14, 2020, the union minister for road transport, highways and MSMEs, Nitin Gadkari, had laid the foundation stone for multiple highway projects worth Rs 20,000 crores, including the Trans Haryana Economic Corridor from Ismailpur to Narnaul on NH 152D.

Ambala to Kotputli Expressway: Construction details

The greenfield Kotputli Ambala Expressway project is one of the biggest road projects in the country, which is expected to transform the road infrastructure in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. It is being developed under the government’s Bharatmala project, at a cost of Rs 11,000 crores. The Ambala Kotputli Expressway project, along with the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, together entail an investment to the tune of over Rs 1 lakh crore.

The project is being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It is divided into 10 construction packages that have already been awarded. The expressway project is a part of the ambitious scheme of the Ministry of Highways, for developing 22 greenfield expressways at a cost of Rs 3.10 lakh crores.

The project has been developed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model.

Ambala Kotputli Expressway: Benefits

The Ambala Kotputli economic corridor will provide direct connectivity to industry goods and passenger traffic in the three states. The greenfield expressway projects by the government have been planned with an aim to decongest major cities. The expressway will also reduce the distance and travel time between Ambala and Jaipur, as it will provide an alternative route, bypassing Delhi.

Road infrastructure is crucial for India’s economic growth since 70% of the goods and about 90% of the passenger traffic relies on the road network. The Kotputli to Ambala new highway will also play a vital role in improving logistics movement and enhancing economic activities in the region.

Kotputli Ambala Expressway: Features

The Ambala Kotputli corridor will have environment-friendly features that include water harvesting spots at every 500 metres. About 1.5 lakh trees will be planted on both sides of the corridor. Additionally, the Kotputli to Ambala route will be equipped with world-class passenger amenities, including food courts and refuelling facilities.

There are wayside amenities such as petrol pump, sanitation facilities, trauma center, dhaba, kiosk restaurants, children’s park, etc. The entire corridor is equipped with advanced traffic management system. There are arrangements for truck and trailer parking. Along the Ambala Narnaul route, provision has also been made for interchange at 16 places. There are two main toll plazas and eight ROBs along the route.

In August 2022, Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari posted the pictures of the 227-km greenfield section of Ambala Kotputli corridor on Twitter.

Kotputli Ambala Expressway: Land acquisition cost

As per media reports, around 2,000 hectares of land was acquired for the Ambala Narnaul highway project. Compensation of nearly Rs 3,000 crore has been paid to the farmers and around Rs 6,000 crore has been spent on the civil construction works.
