How to clean a shower head?

Understand the process in this detailed guide.

Revitalise the showering experience by learning how to clean a shower head effectively. Over time, mineral deposits can clog the nozzles, reducing water flow. Discover simple steps using common household items to restore the shower head’s performance and ensure a refreshing shower every time.

Cleaning shower head: Steps involved

Unscrew and remove the shower head

While there are easy ways to clean shower heads while they are still attached, removing the fitting allows for a more complete and effective clean. Most shower heads are screwed on and quite simple to remove; if the fitting is old or slightly rusted, a few drops of machine oil may be required to unscrew it.

Soak in a bowl of white vinegar

There are numerous advantages to using white vinegar to clean the shower head. Simply because it gets the job done and is a completely safe and environmentally friendly cleaning agent, this common household item is frequently selected over professional cleaners or specific shower head cleaning products.

Remember that the longer one soaks the shower head in white vinegar, the better the benefits. Typically, 3-4 hours is sufficient time for the component to function on the surface; nevertheless, the complete fitting must be immersed in vinegar for it to be effective.

Clean the nozzles

Clogged shower head nozzles promote bacteria growth while also interfering with water flow/pressure. The underlying cause of this issue is mineral deposits that become stuck in the nozzles and must be removed with a toothpick or soft-bristled toothbrush. All you need to do is poke through each nozzle of your shower head to dislodge the debris, which is typically made of rubber/silicone or plastic.

Pinch the nozzles before using the toothpick/toothbrush to assist in releasing the buildup. Keep in mind that plastic and rubber shower head nozzles harden and brittle over time, so pinching them may cause them to shatter or break off. It is best to replace the fitting in this case.

Rinse out the nozzles

Holding the shower head under water is insufficient to rinse out its delicate water nozzles, so reattaching the shower head and allowing water to flow out of it is the best approach to verify that the holes have been properly cleansed and rinsed out. Do this for 3-5 seconds before turning off the water and removing the shower head.

Clean the filter and flow restrictor

Gently pull out the rubber ring visible inside the shower head with tweezers. Remove the filter(s) and air restrictor (if applicable). One will find that the internal components of the shower head have accumulated a lot of filth and debris, which requires a thorough cleaning. Use a sponge and the preferred light cleaning solution; liquid hand soap and water work nicely here.

Wipe the filter, flow restrictor, and rubber ring dry and set aside after washing. Before you replace them, gently clean the inside of the shower head with a toothbrush or a small, narrow bottle brush; after washing the interior, spray water inside to rinse away any displaced debris.

Tip:

If the holes in the components are still clogged after washing, use a pin to loosen the debris.

Wash the exterior

Most shower heads accumulate water stains, which eventually dull the metal. Worse, bacteria can be located on the exterior of the shower head, which should be washed down as part of the shower head cleaning routine. To clean and sanitise the surface, use white vinegar or a light cleaning solution and a sponge; if you choose to use a conventional cleaning product instead of white vinegar, spray the exterior with a disinfectant. After finishing this procedure, wipe the shower head with a lint-free towel and screw it back on.

FAQs

Why is my shower head getting dirty frequently?

Most shower heads accumulate water stains, which eventually dull the metal.

Is washing it with water enough to clean a shower head?

No, holding the shower head under water is insufficient to rinse out its delicate water nozzles.

Yes, it can. Using a plastic bag filled with a vinegar-water solution and securing it around the shower head allows one to clean it without removing it.

How often should the shower head be cleaned?

Regularly clean the shower head every 2-3 months to prevent mineral build-up and maintain water flow efficiency.

How to prevent future buildup on the shower head?

Consider using a water softener or a shower head with anti-scale features to minimise mineral buildup. Regular cleaning also helps prevent future issues.

Does cleaning a shower head improve water pressure?

Yes, cleaning removes blockages caused by mineral buildup, which can improve water pressure and ensure an even spray from the shower head.

What should do if the shower head has stubborn buildup?

For stubborn mineral deposits, one can use a descaling product specifically designed for shower heads, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
