What is the significance of Anant Chaturdashi Puja? How to perform it?

This year Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 28, 2023.

Anant Chaturdashi is the tenth day of Ganesh Chaturthi and marks the end of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the country. This is also the day when lord Vishnu is worshipped in his Anant or infinite form. On this day, it is believed that lord Ganesha bids adieu to Earth and goes back to Kailash. 

Every year Anant Chaturdashi falls on the fourteenth day, or Chaturdashi of the Shukla Paksha, i.e., the waxing moon phase of the Bhadrapada month. This year Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 28, 2023. 

Anant Chaturthi: Timings

Anant Chaturthi tithi begins at 10:18 PM on September 27, 2023. The muhurat for puja is at 6:28 AM on September 28, 2023. The Anant Chaturthi tithi ends at 6:49 PM on September 28, 2023.

How to observe Anant Chaturthi fast? 

    • Wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear fresh clothes for puja.
    • Place an idol of the Sheshrup Anant with seven hoods on it. 
    • Perform the Vishnu, Krishna, and Satyanarayan puja.
    • Take some Yamuna River water in a kalash and keep 14 knotted threads.
    • These are known as Anant Dharma. These can be worshiped either by Panchopchar, or Shodshopchar
    • While women tie the Anant Dharma on their left hands, the men wear it in their right hands. 
    • Note, number 14 plays an important role in this puja where you should keep 14 flowers, 14 Anant Dharma, 14 leaves, 14 fruits, 14 dry fruits etc., in front of the idol.
    • Women and men observe fast on Anant Chaturthi. Those who observe fast can eat only fruits or food without salt on this day. 
    • The puja is completed after doing an aarti.

How to do Panchopchar worship? 

For this you require, flowers, sunlight, deep and neivediya, using which you do the puja. 

 

How to do Shodshopchar worship?

For this, you need to take bath, wear fresh clothes, jewellery, and do puja with all the items mentioned already. Next do aachaman, stuti paath, tarpanam where you pray to your forefathers and finally namaskar

How to do Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi?

On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, you start with performing puja of the Ganesh idol by lighting diyas, incense sticks, offering flowers, dhurva, modak and ladoo. Finally, you do Ganesh aarti and prepare for his farewell. 

Next, aksath is sprinkled on the idol and all the family members do namaskar. Then family members lift the idol and chant prayers. A common verse that is chanted on Ganesh Visarjan day is Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya. This means hail lord Ganesha and we request you to come soon next year.  

As part of food for his journey back to Kailash, in a red cloth some rice grains and cereals are packed. On reaching the Visarjan spot, the Ganesh idol is immersed into water.
