The first step is to measure the dimensions of the wall.

Drywalls are similar to modern canvases for your homes, which make it easier to decorate your walls without caring about damaging them. Not only do they open a door for you to show your creativity, but they also make it easier for you to renovate your space from time to time, because they are easier to put up and remove. Drywall installation: Necessary tools required

Before starting with the drywall installation process, here are a few essentials that you need to gather:

  • Drywall sheets
  • Stud finder and drywall screws
  • A measuring tape
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver
  • T-square
  • Joint tape and joint compound for an even finish
  • Sandpaper to achieve a smoother look
  • Corner beads

Drywall installation process

Measuring the wall and marking studs

The first step is to measure the dimensions of the wall where you are going to install the drywall. With the help of a stud finder, first locate the studs in the wall. They are generally 16 inches apart. Mark the locations of these studs on your wall as well as the ceiling to use them as reference points.

Cutting the drywall

Take a T-square and a utility knife and score the drywall along the marked lines. Scoring is the process where you lightly cut the paper of the drywall along the marked lines and then snap it along these lines to get a more refined finish. You can trim the rough edges using a saw or any other sharp tool suitable for this cause.

Installing the drywall sheets

Now, you can start installing the drywall sheets by adjusting the first sheet along the wall, and while doing so, make sure that the vertical edges align properly with the centre of the studs. With the help of a screw gun, make holes in the drywall and secure it to the studs with screws. Screws should be placed around eight to 12 inches apart along the edges and 16 inches apart in the field.

Cutting the openings (if required)

For cutting doors, windows or any other open outlets, mark the measurements and then carefully cut with the help of a utility knife. Make sure you take precise measurements so you do not end up ruining the entire drywall.

Installing corner beads

Corner beads are installed on the corners of the drywall to add to the overall strength and durability. You can secure these beads with the help of screws and make sure they are aligned with the corners.

Applying joint tape and joint compound

Joint tape and compound on the edges and between the sheets of the drywall are applied to create a seamless look. This provides a smooth finish at the edges. Use a corner trowel to apply the compound evenly over the corners, too. You can spread the compound evenly with the help of a putty knife and let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

Now, you need to sand the compound to ensure a smoother finish and then apply another layer to fill in the cracks. Repeat the process until you achieve the appropriate finish and look.

Final touches

After sanding the entire surface, clean it with a damp cloth and then you can paint your drywall or stick wallpaper on it and the wall is ready.

FAQs

What should be the thickness of a drywall?

The thickness of your drywall must be around ½ inch.

Can I use nails instead of screws to install a drywall?

For switchboards or any other outlets, you can carefully take a measurement and cut it out precisely, making sure the cutout properly aligns with the board.

What to do if my joint compound dries out too quickly?

If your joint compound dries out quickly, you can add a little amount of water to fix it.

How long does it take for a joint compound to dry?

It depends on the type of compound you use, but generally, it requires around 24 hours.

Is it necessary to sand the joint compound?

Yes, sanding ensures a proper finish by making the surface even, so it is necessary to sand when you apply compound on joints.
