How to link income tax PAN card with Aadhar card online?

Taxpayers filing their income tax returns must ensure to link their PAN and Aadhaar. Here’s how to link Aadhaar with a PAN card online and check the Aadhar card PAN card link status.

Before filing your income tax returns, make sure you have linked your PAN card with your Aadhaar number. This is important as per government regulations, as income tax returns would not be processed without the PAN and Aadhar link.

The Aadhar PAN link last date has been extended multiple times over the past few years. As per the Income Tax Department notification, the e-filing of income tax returns was permitted without Aadhar and PAN card linking until August 5, 2017. The Aadhaar PAN link last date has now been extended to March 3, 2023, from the previous deadline of March 31, 2022. According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act 1961, every individual eligible to get an Aadhaar and has a PAN card, is required to link Aadhaar with PAN by March 31, 2023.

Linking PAN with Aadhaar: Significance

Before we proceed to explain how to link PAN card with Aadhar card, let us explain the importance of Aadhar and PAN card linking.

The Aadhaar number is a unique 12-digit number issued to every Indian citizen by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Individuals filing income tax returns, applying for a PAN card or any government scheme, pension, scholarships, or LPG subsidy, must provide their Aadhaar number. Aadhaar card is an identity card, which serves as identity proof for various other purposes, such as opening a bank account, obtaining a passport, etc. It also helps access details like biometrics and contact numbers from the government database. A resident of India can easily enrol to obtain the Aadhaar number free of cost. It is essential to note that an individual cannot possess multiple Aadhaar numbers.

A PAN card is an identity card issued by the Income Tax Department to an individual, containing the permanent account number (PAN), a 10-character alphanumeric identifier.

So, if you are e filing your tax returns, then PAN and Aadhar link is a must. Otherwise, the PAN will become inoperative. Also, one will be unable to perform financial transactions involving mutual funds, where one is required to quote PAN. If one has a PAN and has an Aadhaar number or is eligible to get an Aadhaar, then, one should inform the Income Tax Department.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar online?

PAN card link with Aadhaar card can be done with a simplified online procedure. For this, one is required to sign in to the official income tax e-filing website www.incometax.gov.in.

On the www incometax gov in site, the Aadhaar PAN link can be done in the following two ways:

  • In a two-step procedure for PAN Aadhaar link online, without signing into your account.
  • In a six-step procedure for linking PAN and Aadhar by signing into your account.

PAN Aadhaar link online process without signing into account

Step 1: Visit the official incometaxindiaefiling gov in website to link Aadhar card with the PAN card. Go to the quick links or ‘Our Services’ tab. Then, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ option.

 

How to link income tax PAN card with Aadhar card online?

 

Step 2: Submit the required details, including PAN, Aadhaar number, mobile number and name, as specified on the Aadhaar card.

If only the year of birth is specified on the Aadhaar card, opt for the check box stating, ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’. Tick on the box that mentions, ‘I agree to validate my Aadhaar details’. Select ‘Continue’.

Applicants will get a six-digit OTP on their registered mobile numbers. Submit this OTP in the required field on the verification page. Now, click on the ‘Validate’ button.

How to link Aadhaar with PAN card by signing into your account?

Step 1: Go to the incometaxindiaefiling gov in site for Aadhaar card link with PAN. Register on the portal.

Step 2: In case you are already registered, then, proceed to log in with your username and password.

Step 3: Complete the login procedure by clicking on ‘Please confirm your secure access message’ and submit your password. Click on ‘Continue’.

Step 4: After signing into the portal, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option. You can find the same link in ‘My Profile’ section under the ‘Personal Details’ option.

Step 5: Provide the relevant details and some details, such as name, date of birth, gender, etc., will be auto-filled as per the details submitted during registration. Submit the Aadhaar number and name. Verify the details as per the details on the Aadhaar card.

It is mandatory to click on the ‘I agree to validate my Aadhaar details’ check box. Click on the box mentioning ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’ if only year of birth is mentioned in your Aadhaar card. Now, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.

Step 6: A pop-up message will be displayed on the incometaxindiaefiling gov in page screen link stating that Aadhar card has been successfully linked to the PAN card.

 

How to check the Aadhar card PAN card link status?

After completing the online procedure for PAN and Aadhaar link, citizens can also go to the www incometaxindiaefiling gov in portal and click on the Aadhar status link to check the status. Here’s the step by step procedure:

Step 1: Visit the www incometaxindiaefiling gov in portal to check Aadhar status.

Step 2: Under the ‘Quick Links’ section, click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.

  • Go to the official portal of income tax https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
  • Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under ‘Quick Links’.
  • Provide details such as name, mobile number, Aadhaar number, and PAN.
  • Verify the details by clicking on ‘I validate my Aadhaar Details’ link.
  • Click on the ‘Continue’ link.
  • An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. Submit the OTP. Click on ‘Validate’ to complete the PAN Aadhaar link.

 

Income tax Pan Card and Aadhaar link through SMS

According to the Income Tax department, PAN and Aadhaar can be linked through SMS:

Send SMS in the following format from your registered mobile number to 567678 or 56161:

UIDPAN<Space><12-digit Aadhaar><Space><10-digit PAN>

 

PAN Aadhaar link: How to make payment of fee?

  • Go to the e-Filing portal. Under the Quick Links section, click on Link Aadhaar.
  • Provide your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  • Click on Continue to Pay through e-Pay tax.
  • Provide your PAN and confirm PAN and mobile number to receive OTP.
  • After OTP verification, you will redirected to the e-pay tax page.
  • Click on the proceed link
  • Choose the assessment year AY (2023-24) and type of payment as Other Receipts (500) and Continue
  • Applicable amount is pre-filled against Others. Click on the Continue link.

Challan will be generated. Select the mode of payment on the next page after choosing the payment mode. You will be re-directed to the bank website. Complete the payment.

Payment through NSDL portal

If you have an account in the Bank which is not Authorised for payment through ‘e-Pay Tax’, you can complete the payment through Protean (NSDL) Portal

  • Visit the tax payment page of the Income Tax department
  • Under the Non-TDS/TCS category, select Challan no./ITNS 280
  • Select head ‘(0021)’. Then, choose ‘(500)’
  • Now, choose the payment mode
  • Provide the details, including PAN, assessment year, address, etc.
  • Complete the payment
  • Submit the link request after four or five working days

Payments made through e-Pay Tax functionality or through Protean (NSDL) with Minor head 500 for an amount of Rs 500 till June 30th, 2022, and Rs 1000 from July 1st 2022 to March 31st 2023 in a single challan, are valid mode of payment for PAN Aadhaar linking.

 

What to do if you failed to link your PAN with Aadhaar?

If you fail to link your PAN with Aadhaar, you are required to submit a signed Aadhaar seeding form at the nearest PAN Centre. Carry all the supporting documents including your PAN and Aadhaar card. Note that charges are applicable for the physical seeding of Aadhaar with your PAN.

Who are exempted from PAN-Aadhaar linking?

Indian citizens aged above 80 years are not required to link their PAN and Aadhaar cards. Non-residents and non-citizens also do not require to link their PAN and Aadhaar cards.

Is Aadhaar PAN linking free?

A fee of Rs 500 till June 30th 2022 and Rs 1000 from July 1st 2022 to March 31st 2023 in a single challan will be applicable before submission of Aadhaar-PAN link request on the official e-filing portal.
