The Pratipada of the Chaitra month starts April 8, 2024 at 11. 50 PM and ends at 8.30 PM on April 9, 2024. Thus, Gudi Padwa falls on April 9, 2024.

What is the significance of Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa signifies Brahmadwaj – meaning that Brahma created the entire universe on this day. The festival also marks the coronation of Lord Rama after 14 years of exile.  This festival marks the arrival of the new crop season.

Another historical significance associated with Gudi Padwa is that it was on this day when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj freed the people from the Mughal rule. To celebrate, people especially in Maharashtra hoisted Gudi outside their houses that would remove any negative energy entering the house.

Some people also believe that it is on Gudi Padwa that people celebrated King Shalivahana’s victory over evil and hoisted flags on his return to Paithan.

How to do Gudi Padwa Puja?

Before Gudi Padwa, people clean the entire house to make it Puja-ready. People take oil bath, wear new clothes and start the Gudi Padwa Puja. Torans made of mango leaves are hung at the entrance of the house. This is believed to bring positivity in the house. Also, beautiful rangolis are put outside the house, again to bring in positivity.

Gudi is arranged in each house and puja of this Gudi is done. Gudi is a bright silk saree tied to a long bamboo. It is also decorated with neem leaves, mango leaves and flowers. The bamboo stick is capped with Kalash made of silver or copper and this Gudi is hoisted from the window, the balcony or terrace, such that it is visible to all.

After the puja is completed, gram lentils, honey and cumin seeds are distributed together along with the prasadam.

Food preparations include a dish that is a mix of neem leaves, jaggery, tamarind, etc., that depicts the bitter sweet moments of life. In Maharashtra, the Gudi Padwa meal includes Poori, Shrikhand and Puran Poli.
