Kalyani Expressway: Importance

The Kalyani Expressway helps commuters bypass crowded roads that pass through towns and cities such as Sodepur, Barrackpore and Naihati, significantly cutting travel time.

Along with roads linking various small towns and territories, the route has link roads that connect to Sodepur, Barrackpore, Naihati, Barasat, Madhyamgram, Kankinara, Khardaha and Kanchrapara.

The route intersects state highways 1 and 2, and it links to the National Highway-12 at different locations. The State Highway-6 near Bansberia is connected to the Kalyani Expressway through the Ishwar Gupta Setu, which crosses the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River.

Kalyani Expressway: Features

The 35-km Kalyani-Barrackpore Highway was first constructed in the 1980s. Later, it was extended from the Sodepur Road crossing to Barasat by an additional 10 km. The project was given to the KMDA in 2005, and the stretch was made open to all types of traffic. To improve traffic mobility in the Kolkata Metropolitan Region from east to west and south to north, plans are underway to convert the expressway into a four-lane road.

Kalyani Expressway: Impact

The expressway has made a positive impact on commutes as well as real estate in the region. The route allows passengers to avoid the crowded roadways that have formed along the Hooghly River’s Barrackpore, Sodepur and Naihati lines.

If things go according to plan, travelling to Kolkata will become easier after the expressway is further developed to avoid the BT Road and the Jessore Road while travelling towards the state capital. The KMDA has proposed to develop a road connecting the highway to the current Kalyani Expressway to relieve the traffic jams that passengers experience.

Additionally, the KMDA had planned to build four bridges at various locations along with service roads to increase the expressway’s current width. By boosting connectivity, the expressway has also positively impacted business and residential prospects of the region.
