Karishma Tanna’s husband and Samir Kochhar file housing fraud complaint

A case has been registered under Sections 409, 420 and 120B of the IPC against the accused couple.

Actor Karishma Tanna’s husband Varun Bangera and TV host Samir Kochhar have lodged a complaint with the Mumbai police regarding a property fraud case. The complaint was filed at Andheri Police Station against Pronit Nath and Amisha Nath, the owners of a real estate development firm.

According to allegations, these two individuals cheated Samir Kochhar and Varun Bagera out of Rs 1.3 crore in the guise of selling two new flats in Mumbai’s Bandra. Samir Kochhar was allegedly cheated out of Rs 58.5 lakh while Varun Bangera was duped Rs 44.66 lakh. As per the complaint, which was filed on October 21, 2023, a case has been registered under Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused couple.

As reported by media sources, in December 2020, Samir Kochhar, the complainant in this case, along with his wife and Varun Bangera, a real estate businessman, were actively searching for a property to purchase. During their search, they discovered a project by Pronit Nath and his wife to construct a four-storey building in Pali Village, Bandra (West). The Kochhars and Bangera visited the property site, where Nath provided them with details of the project.

Kochhar decided to purchase a unit for Rs 1.95 crore, and Bangera opted for another unit priced at Rs 90 lakh. As per the FIR, the Kochhars paid Rs 58.55 lakh, while Bangera paid Rs 44.66 lakh to Nath and his wife, Amisha, amounting to Rs 1.03 crore. According to Kochhar’s police complaint, Nath failed to disclose any information regarding bank loans associated with the property. Later, the Kochhars and Bangera discovered that Nath had taken a loan from a financial institution, and the property could be mortgaged to repay the loan. Upon confronting Nath, he assured them that they would receive their flats as promised, without any financial liability.

In June 2022, Nath informed the Kochhars and Bangera that they would receive their flats with clearances in the next three months. However, on June 23, 2023, Nath conveyed his decision not to sell them the flats and assured them of a refund. The Kochhars and Bangera then approached the High Court, but by then, the flats had allegedly already been sold to a third party. Following this, they filed a police complaint. The complaint claimed that Nath used their money to clear the loan and deceived them.
