The Andhra Pradesh Housing board’s primary mission is to assist low-income residents in securing decent, safe, and secure housing. 

Under the AP Housing Board Act of 1956, the former City Improvement Board and the former Town Improvement Trust of Twin Cities merged on July 1, 1960, giving rise to the AP Housing Board.

After the Moosi Floods of 1908 caused widespread destruction in the city of Hyderabad, the Ex-City Improvement Board was established the following year, in 1911. Its primary objective was to enhance city living by eradicating slums, widening streets, building new homes, and enhancing sanitation services. In 1931, the people of Secunderabad came together to create the Town Improvement Trust with similar goals in mind, particularly the improvement of land.

Andhra Pradesh Housing Board: Mission

The Homes Board’s primary mission is to assist low-income residents in securing decent, safe, and secure housing. In its capacity as a housing authority, the Andhra Pradesh Housing Board is currently involved in the following projects:

  • Building homes for people in the Low Income Group, the Middle Income Group, and the High Income Group via integrated or composite housing schemes.
  • Sites and Services for People with Higher and Middle-Range Incomes That Pay for Themselves
  • Building retail spaces, commercial complexes, and high-rise apartment buildings to rent out and increase the board’s revenue stream.

Andhra Pradesh Housing Board: Other activities

Andhra Pradesh’s government saw the unmet need for affordable housing as a development opportunity for the real estate sector in 2002. In response to a projected need for 1.5 million dwellings, the government has committed to building 0.6 million homes, with a focus on meeting the needs of the middle class. With this goal in mind, the board entered into a public-private partnership with IJM Corporation of Malaysia to develop 25 acres of property in Kukatpally for US$150 million.

Slums in Dabeerpura, Sultan Shahi, Mughalpura, Nampally and Gunfoundry, Red Hills, Mallepally, and along the banks of the Musi River were among the areas the board prioritised for improvement. The board is also responsible for the development of the Pathergatti complex, Moazzam Jahi Market, Andhra Pradesh High Court, Osmania Hospital, and City College, in addition to the Nizamia Tibbi Hospital (near Charminar). 

 

Andhra Pradesh Housing Board: Infrastructural actions

The Osmania style, which included domes and arches, was popularised by the CIB. Apart from that, the board improved Hyderabad’s appearance by establishing exquisite parks, planned housing complexes, potable drinking water supply, underground drainage with separate stormwater drains, broad highways, and bus and rail services, long before many of India’s other major cities.

Andhra Pradesh Housing Board: Key partnerships

The board formed a partnership with the Housing and Development Board, a Government of Singapore subsidiary, to implement a “design and construct” strategy for the creation of high-quality housing and related public facilities. On the Hyderabad-Warangal highway, only 18 kilometres outside of Hyderabad, a self-sufficient integrated city dubbed Singapore Township in Ghatkesar was planned to house 1,600 people. 

There have been similar efforts made in the Gachibowli area, next to the International Institute of Information Technological, the Indian School of Business, and the Games Village, to accommodate the people who live and work in HITEC City, Hyderabad’s primary technology township. The Guntur, Bhimavaram, Vijayawada, Mahbubnagar, Kurnool, Machilipatnam, and Rajahmundry boards also launched initiatives.
