April 5, 2024: Kochi Metro has become the second metro to join the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), following the Chennai Metro’s successful integration with the network. ONDC on April 4, 2024, announced the addition of Kochi Metro Rail to its expanding mobility domain, according to media reports.
This will enable commuters in Kochi to buy single journey and return journey tickets through four buyer applications on the ONDC Network: Yatri, Paytm, Rapido and redBus. They can also book tickets on the PhonePe app. Similar facilities were made available in Chennai Metro. There is no additional charge to purchase tickets through the apps.
As cited in reports, ONDC officials said that soon there will be a facility for booking tickets through apps including Google Maps and Uber.
Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT), said that integrating KMRL with ONDC aims to create a future where digital inclusivity enhances urban transport, making it a personalised experience for every citizen. This move is part of the broader mission to digitise and streamline urban transit, ensuring accessibility and efficiency for all, as mentioned in reports.
