June 9, 2023: The Union Government has granted an extension for the Kochi Smart City project until June 2024, according to media reports. The additional time will enable the CSML to focus on implementing numerous ongoing projects, according to officials. Without the extension, several projects initiated by the Cochin Smart Mission (CSML) would have faced risks.
So far, the CSML has completed 20 projects in the city. In addition, two projects are currently in the tendering process, and 30 projects are in the execution stage. The extension from the Centre is necessary for projects such as the Rs 720 crore Ernakulam Market restoration and the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) housing project, which have faced delays.
Even seven years after starting the Smart City project, authorities could not implement projects worth at least 50% of the total outlay, according to a TOI report. The CSML received funding of Rs 592 crore and it spent Rs 458 crore till October 2022, according to an RTI reply. The CSML had planned to implement projects worth more than Rs 1,000 crore by 2020. However, even after extending the deadline twice, the agency could implement projects worth Rs 452 crore.
Kochi is among the first 20 cities chosen under the Central Government’s Smart Cities Mission. The smart city project includes solid waste management, canal restoration, housing, health centres and hospitals development and water management supply. The CSML is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) constituted for the implementation of the smart city mission in Kochi.
