Kolkata Metro has received a budgetary allocation of Rs 2,550 crore for FY2023-24 for two Metro projects – Dum Dum airport to New Garia and Joka to Binoy Badal Dinesh (BBD) Bagh. The Metro projects are being implemented by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). Kolkata Metro is completely owned and controlled by Indian Railways.
The Ministry of Railways increased the allocation for the 16.75-km corridor from Joka to BBD Bagh Metro via Majerhat. Rs 1,350 crore has been allocated for the Joka-Esplanade Metro, also known as the Purple line. The budgetary allocation in FY 2022-23 for this corridor was Rs 794 crore.
Presently, the Metro services are operational between Joka and Taratala. The 6.5-km stretch was inaugurated on December 30, 2022. The section has been developed at Rs 2,477.25 crore, out of which Rs 635 crore has been done for the Depot at Joka and around Rs 1,600 crore for the viaduct and completion of the station of this section. The construction work for the Majerhat metro station is underway.
A sum of Rs 1,200 crore has been allocated for the Dum Dum airport to New Garia via the Rajarhat metro project on the orange line. The allocation in FY 2022-23 for the project was Rs 904 crore.
Recently, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) conducted a mandatory safety inspection on the newly constructed metro line from Kavi Subash (New Garia) – Hemanta Mukherjee (Rubi More) stretch. Built at a cost of Rs 1,550 crore,the 5.4-km segment is a part of Kavi Subhash – Dumdum Airport connecting Rajarhat’s new Metro line, the orange line.
