The Maharashtra state government issued a government resolution (GR) on July 2, 2024, regarding compensation for landowners in Kamathipura as part of the redevelopment of dilapidated cess and non-cess buildings in the area.
As per the GR, all people owning 50 sqm (539 sqft) plot will be given 500 sqft flat each. Owners with 51 to 100 sqm will be given two flats of 500 sqft each and people with 151 sqm to 200 sqm will be given four flats of 500 sqft each. The landowners are compensated under 33(9) of Development Control & Promotion Regulation 2034, a process that involves fair and transparent land acquisition and compensation distribution.
Kamathipura is located in South Mumbai and is spread over 27.59 acre, is set to undergo a transformative redevelopment project. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) plays a crucial role as the nodal agency for this initiative. The area has over 943 cessed buildings with around 8,238 tenants and 349 non-cessed buildings. It also has 14 religious structures, two schools and four reserved plots. Redevelopment of this place has been approved on the lines of redevelopment of the BDD chawls located in South Mumbai.
