A study by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences identified Delhi’s Mathura Road, Lodhi Road, IIT – Delhi, Dhirpur and Gurgaon among the ozone hotspots in April 2023.
These locations have crossed the eight-hour standard of 50 parts per billion (ppb) on most days in April 2023. Gurgaon recorded the highest level of ozone, exceeding 100 ppb on most days. As per the analysis by SAFAR, Delhi University, Pusa and T3 at IGI Airport recorded low ozone concentrations.
Ozone is a harmful gas found in two regions of the atmosphere and protects the earth against Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. In the troposphere layer of atmosphere where humans live, the presence of ozone above the permissible level can be harmful to human health and plants. It can result in ailments like asthma, lung disease, wheezing, chest pain, etc.
According to Gufran Beig, the founder project director of SAFAR, April 8 to 10 witnessed the highest average ozone, crossing 60 ppb. Some stations saw high ozone levels owing to the increase in volatile organic compounds (VOC) from natural sources or vehicle exhaust. High temperatures also play a crucial role.
If the temperature goes up to 40 degrees Celsius or above, the production rate of ozone will see an increase in the coming days, leading to a further rise in ozone, he added. According to Beig, people with respiratory conditions, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and children having premature lungs and older adults are at risk when ozone levels rise above the permissible limit of 50 ppb.
