December 11, 2023: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) presented its Budget for the financial year 2024-25 on December 9, 2023. The Budget estimate for the coming financial year is Rs 16,683 crore. The income expected is Rs 15,686 crore, as per media reports. The MCD Budget, presented in the house by MCD commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, focuses on providing new facilities, such as hospitals and schools, to the citizens. Further, Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi said that the Budget of the officers has been presented by the Commissioner, while the real Budget of the people of Delhi will come in the first week of February, mentioned media reports.
According to the MCD Budget, it has been proposed to keep the existing property tax structure unchanged. The property tax rate will continue to be 12% for A and B category colonies, 11% for C, D, and E colonies and 7% for F, G and H categories. However, it was reiterated in the Budget document that the MCD plans to impose a professional tax on traders and working professionals.
As mentioned in reports, the MCD collected revenue of Rs 2,417 crore through property tax in the financial year 2022-23. The revenue generated is Rs 400 crore more than the revenue generated in 2021-22, as per a Navbharattimes report. Further, the number of property taxpayers in 2022-23 increased to 13,29,641, which is a significant rise of 1.9 lakh.
The civic body is planning to develop a new module of the MCD 311 app, called Smart City 311. Authorities will be able to issue mobile challans to violators of rules using the new feature.
