MMRDA to get new monorail trains in 2023

The first train set will come in the second half of 2023 and three more train sets will be delivered thereafter every three months.

With MMRDA getting new monorail trains in 2023, the frequency of monorail services will increase. At present, the frequency on the 20-km route is 25 minutes. With the new trains, the frequency will increase to 10 minutes.

To be delivered by Hyderabad’s Medha Servo Drives, the first train set will come in the second half of 2023 and three more train sets will be delivered thereafter every three months.

The new trains will have fewer mechanical failures and will fare better on safety standards, besides being more spacious with 10% more passenger carrying capacity, an MMRDA official told FPJ. This will also result in low maintenance costs. MMRDA had placed an order for 10 monorail rakes to improve the frequency and gradually phase out the existing problematic sets. MMRDA will conduct trials of the new trains before making them available for commuters.

MMRDA is operating the monorail with only seven rakes. While two rakes are on standby, five rakes are used to ply between Chembur to Wadala to Jacob Circle.
