According to Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, “Once completed, this route will provide direct and convenient access to an area that was previously underserved by the suburban railway network. We anticipate that approximately three lakh passengers will utilise this metro route, fostering rapid development in the region.”
Mumbai Metro Line 5: Phases
Orange Line Phase 1: Thane to Bhiwandi
The construction contract for phase 1 of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 was won by Afcons Infrastructure. Construction of the metro line began in February 2020. According to MMRDA, the construction of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 was 80% complete by September 2023.
Orange Line Phase 2: Bhiwandi to Kalyan
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is preparing a detailed project report for Phase 2 of the Mumbai Metro Line 5.
Meanwhile, MMRDA is exploring the possibility of extending the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor to Ulhasnagar. A survey regarding this was conducted earlier this year and a detailed project report will be prepared on that basis. Post government approval, construction will start on the route estimated to be around 8 km.
Mumbai Metro Line 5: Project cost
The Maharashtra government approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Mumbai Metro 5 at Rs 8,416 crore in October 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 in December 2018.

MMRDA appoints Ritwik Projects as contractor for construction of Car Depot
The MMRDA, in September 2023, awarded Ritwik Projects the contract for the construction of the car depot at Kasheli for Metro Line 5. The total project cost is around Rs 589,56,02,078; the lowest tender received by MMRDA. The car depot will be constructed on 27 hectares of land and will commission and maintain the metro corridors.
