May 14, 2024: Starting June first week, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be managed by the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). This will be installed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and will be the first ITMS to be installed in Maharashtra.
The average traffic on weekdays and weekends on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is around 40,000 and 60,000 vehicles respectively. With this, traffic will be managed effectively and road safety will be given more importance.
According to a HT report, in phase-1, over 39 gantries have been installed on 95 km stretch. Over 218 artificial intelligence (AI) enabled CCTV cameras have been mounted on these gantries. These cameras will identify 17 traffic violations. Also, the cameras and toll booths will be equipped with automatic number plate recognition through which the police can issue e-challans.
As per the HT report, using the ITMS, the live feed of the violating vehicle will be sent to the toll booth ahead and a hooter will sound off when the vehicle comes near the toll booth. The traffic police won’t issue a no-dues certificate unless the e-challan payment is done.
According to the HT report, all entries to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will have weigh-in motion machines for goods carriers. The expressway will also have weather monitoring systems in around 11 locations. ITMS will also help in picking up broken vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
