Nahani trap: Features, benefits and varieties

Nahani trap is a floor trap that collects water and garbage from fixtures like bathtubs, sinks, showers and washing machines.

In plumbing, traps play a crucial role. They stop illness from spreading through the structure by blocking the entry of sewage gas, insects, and rodents. Some traps are built to hold back a pool of water, which then serves as a watertight door.

The best traps are the ones that can clean themselves. They should provide adequate flow velocity to self-clean, have a smooth surface, and fill the hole uniformly. The word “nahani” means “washing place” in Hindi. Hence sometimes a floor trap may be referred to by that name. The nahani trap’s water barrier prevents toxic gases from entering the structure.

A watertight seal of at least 50 millimetres is required. Even if the drains are dry, a floor trap will catch any escaping wastewater to ensure that no harmful gases may enter the structure. Floor traps are installed on floors to collect wastewater from bathrooms, sinks, and kitchens.

Because of flaws in their design, casting, and overall quality, nahani traps are a primary cause of leaks. Only deep-seal P traps with multiple-inlet fittings, such as those seen on sinks and bathtubs, should be used to avoid this problem.

Nahani trap: Features

  • Its surface should be smooth and devoid of grooves, allowing quick water drainage from the trap.

  • Gully trap should have a net to catch trash and other unwanted materials.

  • The trap should have good drainage and no need for manual draining.

  • It should be easy to instal.

  • The trap design should be easy to build and inexpensive.

  • The trap should be made out of sturdy material.

  • The trap should be adequately filled with water to prevent gases or water from entering the house.

Nahani trap: Benefits

It does not matter whether the drains are open or wastewater is running. A floor trap will keep the odorous vapours outside.

A floor trap collects water and garbage from water-using fixtures, including bathtubs, sinks, showers, and washing machines.

When the sink is drained, a small quantity of water is retained in the trap’s curved bottom, forming a barrier that prevents sewage gases from exiting the drain and entering your house.

Indoors or out, floor drains are installed to effectively and securely channel water away from a surface and into a sewage system or municipal storm drain.

Trap varieties

The gully trap

These traps are installed outside the building and linked to the closest drain/sewer to prevent sewage gas from entering homes. Because of the nature of these traps, the water seal must be at least 50 mm deep. This feature keeps cockroaches and other insects out of sewage pipes.

P trap

In India, a commode would not be complete without this device. The snares are fabricated from cast iron or UPVC sheets. This trap is double-protected against noxious gases since it has a water seal and can’t be opened outside.

S trap

Like the P trap, this trap is used in toilets to prevent leaks from the water closet. The only real distinction between P and S traps is that the former is used for wall outlets while the latter is used for floor outlets.

Floor trap or nahani trap

This drain is installed on the floor to collect water from the bathtub, shower, sink, and other fixtures in the bathroom. They may be found in either cast iron or UPVC, and the top grating is detachable for cleaning purposes. Fifty millimetres is the bare requirement for water tightness.

Intercepting trap

This trap is installed at the building’s last main sewer hole to intercept any noxious gases that could otherwise enter the building’s sewage system via the main sewer. It is equipped with a 100 mm deep-water seal.

Grease trap

A grease trap is a surface-cleaning device used to gather grease from the trash. Most often, this is seen in factories that produce edible goods.

Bottle trap

This trap is placed under sinks and bathtubs to catch any odorous air that could otherwise enter the home.

Q trap

A toilet’s water closet would be incomplete without this trap. It functions similarly to an S trap but is often installed in stories above ground.

FAQs

What are the different kinds of traps?

Floor traps, gully traps, and P traps are all different kinds of traps.

What makes a Nahani trap different from a floor trap?

Nahani Trap has a water seal that keeps dirty vapours from entering the building. There should be a water seal that is at least 50 mm deep. If wastewater flows into the building, foul gases with bad smells can't get in because of the floor trap.
