The government has launched a National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) under the Sagarmala programme. It will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Ports, Waterways and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on April 24, 2023, according to an official statement. The NTCPWC has been established in IIT Chennai at a total cost of Rs 77 crore.
The institute will serve as a technological arm of the ministry and develop cutting-edge application products to offer solutions for various challenges faced by the sector.
As per the statement, the NTCPWC will have world-class capabilities to undertake 2D and 3D investigations of research and consultancy nature for the port, coastal and waterway sector across various disciplines.
Some areas where expertise has already been developed include modelling of ocean, determining the coastal and estuarine flows, sediment transport and morphodynamics, planning of navigation and maneuvering, estimation of dredging and siltation, consultancy in port and coastal engineering – designing the structures and breakwaters, autonomous platforms and vehicles, experimental & CFD modelling of flow & hull interaction, hydrodynamics of multiple hulls, ocean renewable energy coupled with port facilities, the statement said.
