July 24, 2024: In a move that will enhance connectivity in Bihar, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an allocation of Rs 26,000 crore during the presentation of the Union Budget 2024-25. The Centre will provide assistance for the development of key road connectivity projects, which include the Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway, the Patna-Purnea Expressway, Bodhgaya, Rajgir, Vaishali and Darbhanga spurs and an additional 2-lane bridge over river Ganga at Buxar.
An additional allocation to support capital investments will be provided. The requests of the Bihar Government for external assistance from multilateral development banks will be expedited, the finance minister said.
Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway
As per media reports, the Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway will cover a length of around 350 km, connecting the cities of Buxar and Bhagalpur. The project will pave the way for smooth connectivity, facilitating faster travel from Bihar to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and neighbouring regions.
Patna-Purnea Expressway
This is an access-controlled expressway proposed by the government to connect the cities of Patna and Purnea. Currently, the time taken to cover the distance of around 300 km between the two cities is about eight hours. The project is expected to reduce the travel time significantly.
Purvanchal Expressway to connect with Bihar
The Purvanchal Expressway is a 343-km expressway in Uttar Pradesh, which connects Chand Sarai village in Lucknow and Haidaria in Ghazipur. The government has planned to link the Purvanchal Expressway with Bihar through a 17-km greenfield, four-lane Buxar link.
