NHAI plans to introduce satellite-based toll collection system

NHAI plans to integrate the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system into the existing FASTag framework.

June 10, 2024: To transform toll collection on National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited expressions of interest (EoIs) from international firms. The goal is to implement an electronic toll collection system using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), eliminating the need for physical toll booths.

This initiative, led by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), aims to improve tolling efficiency and transparency, offering a seamless experience for highway users. NHAI plans to integrate the GNSS-based electronic toll collection (ETC) system into the existing FASTag framework, initially using a hybrid model that incorporates both GNSS and RFID-based ETC.

Dedicated GNSS lanes will be created at toll plazas to ensure smooth passage for vehicles using the GNSS-based ETC. The EoI outlines the implementation plan and invites suggestions, seeking experienced and capable companies to develop robust toll charger software essential for the nationwide rollout of the GNSS-based ETC.
