NHRCL to build Delhi-Amritsar Bullet Train project; survey begins

Acquisition of land from a total of 365 villages will begin after the survey.

September 25, 2023: The Union Ministry of Railways has launched a socio-economic survey in Punjab for construction of the Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar high-speed railway (HSR) corridor, according to an Indian Express report. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHRCL) will undertake the Delhi-Amritsar Bullet Train. The proposed 465 kilometre (km) high-speed rail corridor will connect Delhi, Chandigarh in Haryana and Amritsar in Punjab, comprising 13 stations.

Land acquisition for the corridor, from a total of 365 villages, will begin after the survey for the corridor is completed. According to the media report, IIM-Research, New Delhi, will conduct the survey. The corridor will include a dedicated 55-foot-wide railway track for bullet trains.

The proposed bullet train, which will operate at a speed of 320 km per hour, is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Amritsar. Currently, it takes around five hours to two hours to cover the distance between the two cities.

The bullet train corridor will start from Dwarka in Delhi and have stops at Sonepat, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. A separate survey is underway in Mohali to set up a railway station. A feasibility report and a geographical survey have been conducted. The railway authority has already sought details of the land which will be acquired.

This upcoming rail corridor is part of India’s proposed high-speed rail network connecting major cities, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

At present, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR) is being developed at a cost of Rs 1.1 lakh crore. It would be the country’s first high-speed rail line, which will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad and significantly reduce the travel time between both cities from six hours 35 minutes to one hour 58 minutes.
