In a significant crackdown, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has confiscated 463 properties from individuals who have defaulted on property tax payments, amounting to Rs 10.44 crore. The NMC, reliant on property taxes as a primary funding source, plans to auction these seized assets shortly.
The deadline for claiming a rebate on property tax payments is the end of December, and those failing to pay by then will incur an additional 2% interest on the outstanding balance. Out of the city’s 6.15 lakh property owners, only 2.85 lakh have fulfilled their property tax obligations. The property tax department of the NMC has set a target of Rs 272 crore for the financial year 2023-24 and has collected Rs 159 crore to date. The NMC is actively pursuing the recovery of Rs 750 crores in unpaid property taxes through a targeted campaign.
As part of the ongoing initiative, the properties of defaulters are being seized zone-wise, and these properties are slated for auction if taxes remain unpaid. The NMC offers various incentives to citizens who consistently pay their property taxes on time. The highest number of confiscated properties, totaling 167 with an outstanding balance of Rs 3.90 crore, is in the Nehru Nagar zone, followed by 85 properties in Lakadganj with an outstanding amount of Rs 90.60 lakh.
