One card system to be introduced for Delhi Metro and bus commuters

More transit options will be included in the system, according to media reports.

October 27, 2023: Delhi commuters relying on the Delhi Metro and buses for travelling will soon be able to use a single card for buying paying bus fare and metro fare, according to media reports. The initiative is in line with the Delhi government’s plan to integrate the system with the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). The transport department will offer NCMC-compliant card purchase options to the public. A TOI report cited an official stating that the department plans to execute it within three months.

More transit options will be included in the system to enhance the convenience of the travellers. NCMC is a contactless, inter-operable transport card conceptualised by the housing and urban affairs ministry, which provides a commuter with a common payment system for different transit options.

As per reports, tenders were floated, and the department has completed the process of technical evaluation of all the bids submitted.

The common mobility card system aims to replace the ticketing system and implement a one-nation-one-card facility. It will help integrate the public transport system and bring different transit operators under a single platform while promoting digitisation.

According to the TOI report, the initial phase of the project will involve the deployment of electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) for 7,500 buses and the implementation of smart NCMC cards for ticket purchases. NCMC cards will be enabled for offline payments for multi-modal transit. After successful completion, the integrated platform will connect different transportation modes such as buses and metro and will be extended to autos and cabs. The ETMs will also issue pink tickets for women travellers to travel for free.
