Panagal Park: History

Panagal Park was developed in 1923 when the area of T. Nagar was carved out of the existing Mambalam neighbourhood. The park was intended to be a residential area and was named after the then Chief Minister of Madras, the Raja of Panagal. The park used to have a public radio that catered to the visitors who gathered there to listen to music and news in the early days.

The park covers an area of 8 acre and has three entry points. According to the  records from 2019, the Panagal Park is home to approximately 218 trees, comprising a variety of species such as Gulmohar, neem, almond, peepal, big-leaf mahogany, mast trees and West Indian elms. It also has a well-maintained walking track, a children’s play area and a fountain.
