Patna Airport: Budget 2025 announces capacity expansion

FM Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget presented on February 1, 2025 announced that the airport in Patna will be expanded to increase its capacity. Additionally, a brownfield airport at Bihta and greenfield airports at Bihar will be facilitated to meet the future needs of Bihar, Sitharaman said in her Budget Speech.

Patna Airport: Expansion plan

The runway at the Patna Airport presently is 2,072 m which experts believe is short if a large aircraft needs to land in the airport. Thus, a two level new passenger terminal was decided to be constructed at the airport. As per industry reports, this new airport will start operations by April 2025.

Designed by Singapore based firm Meinhardt, the interiors of the new terminal building will focus on Madhubani art, Bihar’s traditional art form and ruins of Nalanda University.  This will have six aerobridges and the apron will hold around 14 aircraft as opposed to six that it is currently holding.

The expansion started in October 2018. The new facility will be spread over 65,155 sqm as opposed to the present terminal that is spread over 72,00 sqm. Once completed, the airport will be able to handle around 8 million passengers as opposed to the current 2.5 million passengers. The airport also plans to demolish the existing air traffic control once the new one is operational.

One of the reasons for this is the accessibility and connectivity provided by the airport, railway station and the bus stop. With the airport expansion, infrastructure around this area is also developing which is also contributing to the real estate prices in this area.
