Peace lily or Spath is a flowering plant of the Spathiphyllum Monocotyledonous species, belonging to the Araceae family. The plant is mainly found in tropical areas of the Americas and southeastern Asia. Peace lily is not a real lily of the Liliaceae family.

Peace lilies are evergreen herbaceous perennial plants characterised by long, broad leaves and flowers produced in spadix covered by white, greenish, or yellowish spathe. It is an indoor plant that can survive in minimum water and sunlight.

Is peace lily toxic?

Unlike true lilies of the Liliaceae family, which are harmful to cats and dogs, a peace lily does not have toxins. However, it may be mildly toxic to humans and some animals when consumed. Moreover, the plant has calcium oxalate crystals that may cause problems like skin irritation, burning sensation in mouth, nausea, or difficulty swallowing.

 

Peace lily: Care and maintenance

  • Peace lilies grown in more light may produce excellent white spathes and more flowers. However, if the plant receives low light, it may tend to bloom less and appear like a typical foliage plant.
  • Peace lilies need minimum water to thrive. You can check once a week if the plant requires watering, especially if the topsoil surface is dry to touch. Avoid overwatering the plant to prevent leaves from drooping, especially if you notice the soil is damp.
  • Pick a plant container having proper drainage holes. Keep a plate beneath to catch excess water draining out. Make sure roots are firm and light-coloured, and not soggy.
  • Peace lilies prefer stable temperatures ranging from 18 to 26 degrees Celsius (65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). The plant requires protection from wind, cold and extreme temperature changes.
  • Moreover, the plant does not require fertilising. Go for a balanced fertiliser once or twice a year, and use an organic fertiliser as the plant may be sensitive to chemicals.
  • Go for repotting or dividing the plant when it starts outgrowing the flowerpot.
  • When repotting, place the plant in a container larger than the current flowerpot by a minimum of 2 inches.
  • When dividing the plant, cut through the centre of the rootball with a sharp knife. Place each half in a new container.
  • Wash or wipe the broad plant leaves occasionally to avoid dust from accumulating. Doing this can benefit the plant in getting maximum sunlight.
  • The plant also needs protection from common pests such as spider mites and aphids. For this, wipe the plant leaves and spray using insecticidal soap.
