May 18, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone via video conferencing for railway projects over Rs 8,000 crore in Odisha on May 18, 2023.
Under this, Modi laid the foundation stone of the redevelopment of the Puri and Cuttack Railway Stations.

Focus will be on 100% electrification of the Odisha rail network which will reduce the operating and maintenance cost and reduce reliance on imported crude oil.
Doubling of the Sambalpur-Titlagarh rail line, a new broad gauge rail line between Angul-Sukinda, the third rail line connecting Manoharpur-Rourkela-Jharsuguda-Jamga and a new broad-gauge line between Bichhupali-Jhartarbha are other projects that will be introduced. These projects are expected to address increased traffic demands owing to industrial development in the steel, power and mining sectors in Odisha and ease the pressure on passenger traffic in these rail sections.
The PM also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Puri and Howrah, which will pass through Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore districts in Odisha and Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur districts in West Bengal. This is Odisha’s first Vande Bharat Express and opertaions will starts from May 20, 2023.
