Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Whitefield – KR Puram Metro line in eastern Bengaluru on March 25, 2023. Metro services on the route began on March 26, 2023. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) Managing Director Anjum Parwez accompanied the PM. Modi boarded a train to the Sadaramangala (Satya Sai Hospital) metro station, 4.4 km away and interacted with construction workers, students and metro employees on the train journey.
The 13.72-km Whitefield (Kadugodi)- KR Puram Metro stretch is the first tech corridor in Bangalore to be connected by Metro. According to Parwez, the new Metro line is expected to cut down travel time by 40% and benefit around 6 lakh people working in IT parks, Export Promotion Industrial areas, malls and hospitals. It will also promote the development of the software industry and help reduce road congestion.
The new Metro section has been developed under the Namma Metro phase 2 project and extends the existing Purple line from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield Station towards the east.
