Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka, is a bustling IT destination that draws a large number of working professionals every year. With the introduction of the Bangalore metro purple line, these localities have become easily accessible. On October 9, 2023, The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) opened the purple line, connecting Challaghatta to Kadugodi (Whitefield). The two missing sections, spanning 2.1-km Baiyappanahalli-KR Puram and 2.05-km Kengeri-Challaghatta, completed the 43.49-km purple line route, also known as the East-West Corridor.
The extension of the Purple Line will be taken up under the Bangalore Metro Phase 2 project. The BMRCL will spend Rs 1168 crore to build the extension, with the cost including Rs 152 crore for land acquisition. The BMRCL plans to extend the Namma Metro Network to outlying towns such as Doddaballapur, Nelamangala, Devanahalli and Hoskote.

Bangalore Metro Purple Line: Current status
As of September 2025, the Bangalore Metro Purple Line from Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the southwest is fully operational. However, work on the upcoming Purple Line extension from Whitefield to Belathur Colony is in progress.
Purple Line metro witnesses overcrowding after the inauguration of Yellow Line
September 16, 2025: A month after the Yellow Line in Bangalore was opened, there has been a significant increase in ridership. This has led to considerable pressure of the existing Purple and Green lines, leading to overcrowding, as per media reports. Currently, 57 trains operate on the Purple and Green lines. Despite the demand, BMRCL has not been able to deploy additional trains. According to officials, once Yellow Line reaches eight trainsets, new trains will be added to these lines.
Purple Line metro fare
The fare on the metro purple line in Bangalore is fixed depending on the distance travelled and is subject to revision by the metro authorities.
- A minimum of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 50 is chargeable for a token for one-way journeys.
- A minimum of 25 persons must purchase a group ticket to travel between the same set of stops. A 10% discount is available on these tickets.
- Smart cards (Varshik) are rechargeable contactless cards available for Rs 50. A discount of 5% on token fares is available. Users can charge the cards for up to Rs 3000 in multiples of Rs 50. Commuters can recharge the smart card on the Namma Metro app, WhatsApp or the customer care counters.

Metro timings
The Purple Line metro in Bangalore is not fully operational. Certain sections are under construction as part of Namma Metro Phase II. The train services on the busy Whitefield route start from 5:00 AM and end at 11:00 PM, running at a frequency of 5-7 minutes. The Namma Metro train timings differ on Sundays, which a frequency of 7-8 minutes. Further, the train frequencies may vary during peak and non-peak hours.

Purple line route details
The purple line, which connects the eastern and western parts of the city, comprises 37 stations. It takes around 80 minutes to cover the total distance. The metro line route passes through several important commercial hubs and landmarks, including MG Road and Vidhana Soudha. The purple metro line in Bangalore starts from Challaghatta in the southwest and ends at Whitefield in the east. It has three interchange stations for other metro lines – MG Road, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda and Mysore Road.
Project construction details
Work on the 42.30-km line under Phase 1 began in April 2007. In 2011, the first segment of the Purple Line, connecting Baiyyappanahalli and MG road, became operational. The final section was opened on June 17, 2017.
On August 30, 2021, the metro extension from Mysore Road to Kengeri in the southwest was opened. The extension from Krishnarajapuram to Whitefield (Kadugodi) on the east side was inaugurated on March 26, 2023. In October 2023, the two sections (Baiyappanahalli to Krishnarajapura and from Kengeri to Challaghatta) were opened.

Bangalore Metro Phase 3
There are plans to extend the metro network in Bangalore to Hoskote in the east, Nelamangala in the west and Bidadi in Ramnagara district in the southwest. The Bangalore Metro Phase 3 project, covering a metro corridor of 44.65 km, includes two lines – a 32.15-km section from JP Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura and a 12.5-km section from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. The construction of the corridor, which will run along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), is expected to be completed by 2035. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 15,611 crore.
Bangalore Metro Phase 4
New metro lines spanning nearly 129 km will be added under the Bangalore Metro expansion project. Under the phase 4 project, the Bangalore Metro Purple Line, along with Green Line, will be extended to areas such as Bidadi (Mysuru Road), Harohalli (Kanakapura Road), Attibele (Hosur Road) and Kunigal Cross (Tumakuru Road near Neelamangala). A semicircular metro line will connect areas such as Jigani, Anekal, Attibele, Sarjapur and Varthur, enhancing metro connectivity to eastern and southern parts of the city.
Integrated Iblur Station Project
The BMRCL has planned to construct an integrated metro station at Iblur, which will serve two metro lines:
- Outer Ring Route: Central Silk Board to KR Puram under Phase 2A
- Sarjapur and Hebbal route under Phase 3A
The station will ensure smooth commuting for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) travelers and ensure easy access to the commercial areas, including Town Hall, Central College and Cunningham Road.
Plans for last-mile connectivity
As per media reports, the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) has urged companies and tech parks along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Bangalore to offer shuttle services for their employees to the nearest metro station. The move will be instrumental in the opening of the Byappanahalli-KR Pura Namma Metro in the first week of October.

Facilities
The Purple metro line in Bangalore is equipped with modern facilities. These include air-conditioned train coaches, elevators and escalators, advanced safety systems like CCTV, facilities for the disabled, parking areas, electronic information and destination display system, etc.
According to media reports, the BMRCL plans to upgrade metro depots to support metro expansion, including the Purple Line and Green Line. The metro depots are located at Peenya (for the Green Line), Kadugodi-Whitefield (for the Purple Line) and Baiyappanahalli. A new depot has been constructed at Hebbagodi to support the yellow line. Further, enhancements will be done at the Peenya depot, including addition of new platforms, at an estimated cost of Rs 1.94 crore. The authorities have completed a redevelopment work for the depot at Baiyappanahalli at a cost of Rs 249.19 crore. The upgraded facility features a two-level structure.
The BMRCL is also developing five new depots to boost metro expansion. These will be located at Shettigere (Airport Line), Kothanur (Pink Line from Nagawara to Kalena Agrahara), Anjanapura (Green Line extension), Challaghatta (Purple Line extension), and Hebbagodi (Yellow Line).
QR ticketing facility
The BMRCL has implemented the QR code facility for the metro stops on the Purple Line. These QR codes will enable passengers to access the Bangalore Purple line metro map from their mobile phones. Among other facilities is the skywalk constructed by the BMRCL, connecting the Baiyappanahalli metro station to BMRCL’s traffic integration area on the NGEF side (Kasturinagar).

The BMRCL has introduced the Namma Metro Mobile Application aimed to provide seamless metro services for commuters. Citizens can download the application from the play store on Android and IOS platforms and use it for availing various services such as planning metro trips and calculating the time of the metro journey, checking metro fare, booking metro tickets and recharging smart cards. Moreover, the mobile application can be used to view the latest metro route map. These services are available in different Indian languages.
